BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) is an agency of the Provincial Health Services Authority that focuses on preventing and controlling communicable disease and promoting environmental health for the province. The day to day public health work of the BCCDC is done in support of regional health authorities, the Ministry of Health and the Provincial Health Officer. Combating the spread of HIV/AIDS in Aboriginal communities
It has long been known that British Columbia’s Aboriginal women face a disproportionate number of health and social challenges, and are at an increasingly high risk for contracting HIV. BCCDC has been helping combat this issue with Around the Kitchen Table, a project model which fosters traditional teaching activities by combining them with HIV/AIDS education.
